George Pearson Buell

George Pearson Buell was born October 4, 1833, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. He was a first cousin of Major General Don Carlos Buell. Before the Civil War, Buell was a Civil Engineer, having graduated from Norwich (Vt.) University in 1856. In 1861, he entered volunteer service with the 58th Indiana Infantry. He took part in the battle at Shiloh and was promoted to colonel of the 58th Indiana. He commanded this regiment at Perryville and later a brigade at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga. He led a demi-brigade at Chattanooga and was awarded an army brevet for “gallant and meritorious services” on March 2, 1867. His regiment was assigned to the pioneers dealing mostly with pontoons. Additionally, Buell served in the Atlanta campaign and the March to the Sea. On January 12, 1865, he was brevetted brigadier general for “long, faithful, and most valuable services, and for able management of pontoon train.” He then commanded a brigade, and sometimes the division, during the Carolinas campaign. He was mustered out with his regiment on July 25, 1865, and joined the regular army the following year serving as a lieutenant colonel, 29th Infantry. George Pearson Buell died on active duty as a colonel, 15th Infantry, on May 31, 1883, in Nashville, Tennessee. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
